There are always debates on what you should have for when you are prepping for the apocalypse, and I believe there are many basic things that you should definitely have, especially for you beginning preppers out there. I will list some of the basic things that you should have with you when prepping, some may seem obvious, but never the less I will list them as well.
- A Knife, A Machete, An Axe.
- A knife is a very useful thing to have in almost any situation. You can use it as a weapon, to make weapons, to cut rope, and to help prepare food. These are just a few of the ways that you can use a knife when trying to survive. I don’t think you could ever have too many knifes.
- A machete is useful for many things, including cutting down small trees, a weapon, clearing through dense brush, and many other things. I think a machete is a great thing to include in your survival kit.
- An axe is useful for basically the same things as a machete, except the axe will be better for cutting down thicker trees and cutting fire wood. It can also be used as a weapon. Now you might think that these three things could be interchangeable and that you only need one, but I believe that you could use all three and I would recommend having all three in any kit.
- Matches, Lighter, Flint and Steel.
- If you have read anything about trying to survive in the wild, fire is usually one of the top two things that you will need when trying to survive. It is essentially when trying to stay warm, especially in colder places. You will be able to use it to cook food. It will also help ward off any animals that may be lurking around. Everything that I have read, and all the training that I have been through always recommends having three different ways to start fire and these are the three that I would recommend.
- Water Container and water purifying device.
- Any water bottle will work as a container. However there are many different choices that you can use to purify your water. Some that I have used are iodine tablets, chlorine tablets, water purifying pumps, or simply boiling them. Water is also essential for survival seeing that you can not survive more then 3 days without water.
- Weapons.
- Weapons are essential for protection against the people who are trying to take advantage of you. The dangers that come with prepping are that there will be people willing to kill you for the things that you have started to collect over the years. I would recommend any gun really, my favorites include an AR-15 and a 9mm pistol. They can come pretty cheaply and the ammo is easy to come by.
- Flash Light
- This should be pretty obvious to most people. It gets dark at night, and unless you like not being able to see, then you will want to have a flash light so you will be able to see your way around.
- Food
- This one should also be obvious, you need food to survive. You can store mass amounts of food by buying the tubs of survival food that can last for years without going bad. However these can be pretty expensive. If you can’t do that then you can store some things such as rice, beans, canned food items, peanut butter, and noodles. These are just a few items that can benefit you to store during your preparations.
- First Aid Supplies.
- First aid supplies are necessary because you will be injured at some point, whether it would be a small scratch or something bigger like a broken bone. It is always better to be safe and be prepared for every type of injury possible.
- Hygiene Supplies.
- This is not the most necessary thing, however I myself like being clean, and I would like to be able to maintain somewhat cleanliness during my survival. However if you are on a budget, then this is not the first thing that I would buy when making my survival kit.
- A good pair of boots.
- I believe this is the most underrated survival item. When you are trying to survive, you might have to walk long distances. You will want a nice pair of sturdy and comfortable boots. This could be pretty expensive however, I would recommend looking into military surplus for cheaper versions of great boots that the military find fit for their soldiers.
- Duct Tape.
- Duct tape is good for everything. You can do almost anything with this, they proved it on myth busters, and I have two tools of duct tape in my survival kit. I would recommend at least one roll for any survival kit.
- Rope.
- Rope is helpful for building shelters, for making snares, and for many other things. There are so many things that you can do with rope that will help you through survival. I would recommend paracord, or 550 cord. This is a very strong type of rope, and I personally have 100 feet of it in my survival kit.
- Fishing Line and Hooks.
- This one is related to food for obvious reasons. There is fish in almost every body of water, and being able to catch them will give you a steady supply of food. You do not need a rod, just the line and hooks and you can fashion a pole out of wood if you would like.
- Signal Equipment.
- If you are trying to survive because you got lost in the woods, a plane crash, or you are looking to be rescued it is helpful to have signal equipment because you will be able to signal anyone who is looking for you or even people that are not looking for you and will help your chances of being rescued.
- Compass/Maps.
- A compass and map will help you find your way, if you know how to use it. If you get a compass make sure that you know how to use it, because it will be a waste if you just have it and have no idea how to do it.
- Change of Clothes.
- This is also not the most necessary per say but I believe that the clothes you will be wearing will become gross, dirty, and torn up. It will benefit you to have a change of clothes so that you will be comfortable and well protected instead of wearing the same worn down clothes you have had on the whole time.
