Attack on the Power Grid

Cyber attacks on the US have become more and more frequent in the recent years, and we are just one successful attack from being sent back into the dark ages. There are thousands of attacks a day on the US, most of these are harmless, however some have been successful. Just recently in the last year or two China has hacked into and stolen US military blueprints for multiple aircraft, including what is thought to be the blue prints for both the F-22 and the F-35, the newest and the most kept secret aircraft in the US fleet. This just shows me that if China is able to get into these files, they will be able to easily get into the power grid and just turn it off. If or when they do this, we will have no way of just turning the power back on, it will take years replacing all the power to the whole country which will shove us into a dangerous situation. A cyber attack however is not the only way we could lose power. If a nuclear weapon is detonated in the upper atmosphere over the center of the US sending an EMP across the country, most of the countries power grid will be destroyed causing the same power outage that a cyber attack would.

A cyber attack on the power grid or an EMP will shut the power off for the whole country, and will take years to fix. During this time the country will be in turmoil, this will allow people to commit crimes without having to worry about getting caught, this will create riots throughout the country, and uncontrolled violence. However this is not it, trade routes will be shut down, there will be no goods moving across the country, stores will be closed, and you will be forced to fend for yourself when it comes to food and water. This is the most dangerous part, because there will be those people who will see that you are prepared for all this and they will not hesitate to kill you to take your food and water. 

To prepare for this attack, you should first start out by having a second source of power. There are many different types that you could use, the most common being solar, wind, or just having a generator. You can also store the power that you generate in batteries, including car batteries, which is what I would recommend. The next step would be to have a source of food, this would have to include a garden and some source of protein whether this would be chickens, fish, beef, or pork. You would need both a source of protein and vegetables and fruit as well. Now you will need a source of water, this could be collecting rain water, having a pond where you can sterilize the water, or a well. All these steps would be the first ones I would take in the process of planning for having a loss of power.

The next step would be to gather and stock up on weapons. You will have to protect yourself and your family against anyone who will kill you to take what you have. You must be willing to do anything if it means surviving, because if you're not, you will be dead when someone comes around who is. These are the steps that I would make into preparing for this, which you could make somewhat cheaply, or you could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Just always prep to the budget that you can afford, because until the apocalypse happes, you still have to pay bills.
